Smoking tobacco using a water pipe also called as hookah, generally is viewed in a more positive light than smoking cigarettes, particularly for women, according to one of the first studies on water pipe and cigarette smoking to look at social attitudes and gender. These pipes originated in the Middle East hundreds of years ago and were popular primarily among men who used them to smoke tobacco in cafes, where they gathered and talked.

In hookah, tobacco is heated by charcoal, and the resulting smoke is passed through water filled chamber, cooling the smoke before it reaches the smoker. Some water pipe users believe that this method of smoking tobacco delivers less tar and nicotine than regular cigarette smoking and has fewer adverse health effects because of the filtering effect of the water. Especially, in these days water pipe smoking seems to be increasing among adults as well as youth. Teens who had ever tried smoking and boys were more likely to report using these pipes and youth were the least likely to report using them. It is interesting that youth reporting water pipe use perceived it to be more socially acceptable and less addictive and harmful to their health than smoking cigarettes.

These pipes of many forms are available throughout a large part of Eurasia. Several different names are associated with these pipes, and some of these refer to the construction materials from which the pipes were originally made. For example, the word hookah refers to a round storage-jar. In their basic operating principle, all of these pipes use water to cool the hot smoke and render its flavor mellower. Finally, there are some well established and experienced manufacturers of these pipes are selling these items through online For more information and details, please do not hesitate to visit their valuable website.

Using PVC Pipe

Using PVC Pipe

PVC Pipe is a versatile form of pipe which has revolutionized modern plumbing. PVC can be used for drainage, waste water or vent piping but is not suitable for water supply, in which case, copper pipe is most commonly used.
PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride which is a compound designed for strength and durability. It is resistant to corrosive materials found in cleaners and other household chemicals and also to the extremes of hard and soft water. It resists leakage and does not conduct electricity. For these reasons it is the common choice for modern plumbing and for replacing old plumbing.
There are many different sizes, lengths and diameters of PVC pope available. Pipes are designed to fit within each other and fixed with solvent cement. PVC pipes are measured by their inside diameter.
A coupling is the term used to describe a join between two pieces of PVC pipe, in particular when they are joined with no angle. Joins can be of varying degrees however, typically they are 22, 45, 60 and 90 degrees. An angled join is generally called an elbow.
Transition pieces are available to allow connection with other types of piping. A threaded adapter is available which will allow joining between threaded galvanized pipe. For connecting to non threaded metal pipe a gasket can be used which threads over both ends of pipe and is then secured in place using stainless steel clamps.
When fitting PVC pipes be sure to wear protective eye wear and a mask. Cut using a PVC hand saw and then use a deburring tool or the tip of the saw to remove any rough edges, especially from the inside of the pipe. Dry fit the pipes together to ensure that they are a good fit before applying solvent cement. Mark out exactly where the pipes will be joined together as once you apply the cement you will need to act quickly.
Joining PVC pipes is a two step process. Firstly a primer is applied, which cleans the area and begins a chemical reaction with the pipe. Spread primer on the outside of the pipe and on the inside of the fitting. Next spread cement over the same areas of the piping. Once the cement has been applied insert the pipe and hold for a few seconds for the cement to set. Always work in a well ventilated area and wear a face mask, as these chemicals can have quite a powerful odor. Run some water through the join to ensure that a good seal has been made.
PVC pipe is extremely versatile and hardy and the creative home improver can find many projects involving its use, including bird feeders, storage, hanging planters and more.
Once done with PVC, move inside and undertake some area rug decorating.

Cold Pipe Insulation

Cold Pipe Insulation

Using Insulation Jackets on Cold Pipe Systems

Insulation is not just used for containing heat. It is also used to control cold pipe systems and keep them functioning properly and in good repair.
There are several issues to be dealt with when using insulation jackets on cold pipe systems. The first and possibly most important concern is controlling condensation. When the cold pipe system contacts the air, condensation will form once the pipe system is below the dew point of the ambient air. This condensation can aversely effect the quality of the pipes and cause mould, ice, and degradation of the pipe material.
Insulation jackets need to be specially designed with sufficient thickness and vapor retardation qualities to keep condensation from gathering. Condensation causes corrosion of metal and decreased efficacy of insulating materials in the insulation jackets.
Insulating Cold Pipes vs. Insulating Hot Pipes
It is a common misconception that cold insulation materials can be the same as insulation for hot systems. In reality, there are several differences between cold system insulation needs and hot system insulation needs.
  • Closed cell structure: Closed cell structure is necessary to avoid wicking behavior. Most open celled material used for hot pipe systems allows water to enter because the heat will cause the moisture to evaporate before it can corrode the metal. This same moisture ingress is very detrimental to cold systems because the moisture does not evaporate.
  • Effective Water Vapor Barriers: Preventing condensation from gathering directly on the metal surface being insulated a key part of avoiding metal degradation. A solid, flexible water vapor barrier is necessary to prevent water from condensing on the metal pipe surface. This type of water vapor barrier is not necessary for hot systems.
  • No Thermal Bridging Potential: Often, there are strangely shaped or bent connections that are left un-insulated because their size and shape make them hard to find insulation for. Examples include expansion joints, triple duty valves, and flange sets. These types of joints are potential thermal bridge points if left un-insulated. In cold systems, they will collect moisture. Bendable or flexible insulation is needed to protect against this.
Cold Pipe Insulation Materials
There are several types of materials that can be used to insulate cold systems. When combined with the appropriate vapor barriers, materials like fiberglass, mineral wool and cellular glass are rated for low temperatures. Because of their flexible and closed-cell nature, foam polyurethanes are also popular for insulating cold pipe systems. There are many types of flexible and rigid insulation techniques for cold pipe systems that involve a number of variations in materials used.
Ideal Cold Pipe Insulation Characteristics
  1. Strong vapor barrier capability
  2. Closed sell, non wicking components
  3. Air tight application
Often, materials that include all of these characteristics have one major drawback. Getting to the actual pipe surface for maintenance purposes often involves damaging or permanently removing the insulation that was applied. This can get rather expensive, especially if the area that needs to be reached is a valve that needs to be freely accessible. There are several removable insulation options for cold pipe systems that make reaching these areas easier and less costly.
William Jones has been in the heating and cooling industry for the past 37 years. Starting out in 1972 in the plumbing and heating industry, he obtained his Journeyman Plumbers license, then his Master Plumbers license and in Connecticut the P-1 unlimited Plumbing and Piping license. William studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Haven.
Being extremely interested in boilers and steam he then spent several years as a sales engineer concentrating on insulating steam systems and thermal efficiency. This experience in thermal efficiency led William to the point of being the foremost designer of reusable, removable insulation jackets in the United States. William is responsible for the design and specification of the Thermaxx LLC removable insulation covers.

How to Design Piping Systems

Piping design is a very interesting subject and a profession too which needs a lot of serious concentration and visualization. Design piping systems mainly consists of Plot plans, Piping Plans, Piping Isometrics, Bulk Material take-off, Project material take-off, Tie-in Schedule, and finally Support Schedule.

How to Design Piping Systems – Concentration and Visualization.

Concentration and visualization go hand to hand. How important is concentration and visualization on subject of how to design piping system? Is your first question right, I would also have the same query popping up in my mind if I get in to your shoes and observe the scenario from your window.

Honestly and very, very honestly a passionate piping designer should be so fanatical that colleagues looking at him should feel that he/she has driven crazy. Well here I would like to share my practical experience with you, this was in my office once I was routing a 36” line I was in to my deep visualization, observing the route of my 36” line I was in stagnant my eyes were looking straight and unfortunately the other side on me was beautiful newly recruited co-partner Ms Alana (name changed).

Alana was under an impression that I was lusty about her but seriously I was observing the dramatic routing of my 36” line and its branches, after a short while she saw me walking a few steps to right holding my selves looking up in the air at short intervals with both my hands in my pocket, well by now she was quite sure that I was mentally psychic. But gradually and almost immediately she was acknowledged about my intensity of concentration and visualization.

But ever since the advanced technology has introduced innumerable solutions and software’s which neither consume less time, paper and paper work but also make the piping design an easy task, for example PDMS.
How to Design Piping Systems – Plot Plans (PP)

PP plays a vital role from the very initial stage after winning an engineering contract. The PP’s are usually generated in a very speedy pace and also contains very restricted information. This key deliverable is thus initially generated with only tentatively positioned equipments, pipe racks with dimensions, location and sizes, the only purpose of which is to get a rough idea of the plant.

Further the constructability is then assessed and this deliverable is released for the client’s approval. Subsequently the copies are circulated to departments of Engineering, Planning, Construction, Operations, Cost and Estimation and finally Purchase as symbolic orientation and acts as a universal document utilized by the inter-disciplines including the client.
How to Design Piping Systems – Plot Plans Development

PP’s in the primary phase are developed very proficiently depending on the project design specifications with estimated sizes of equipments and Process Flow Diagram’s (PFD) to verify structural model and virtual equipment arrangement.

All the huge diameter piping headers and expensive piping such as alloy piping and the major pipe racks are illustrated as compelled by PFD’s. Usually high costing pipes are mentioned in different colors, whereas the process piping connected to the equipments are highlighted in separate colors to identify the costing with ease.

As PP’s are the vivacious document sprouting through the entire life of the plant, it is described in different names in different stages of progress in a process plant. Hence the list of PP’s with respect to level of progress follows:-

· Proposed PP: - Specially developed for bidding the project.

· For Approval PP: - Released for client’s approval with the information of space availability, roads, surrounding occupied areas, highlighting the fouling information.

· Overall PP: - Describing the utility, storage area, unloading and loading areas of a particular process plant etc.

How to Design Piping Systems – Plot Plans Major role

· PP’s are necessary for achieving Safety permits and verifying ecological or environmental and employee’s safety. These are the most important documents used in evaluating fire protection.

· PP’s are the major references to measure completion of project during the courses of construction, PP’s thus help in terms of payments after partial completion of project.

· Prevailing winds shall also be taken in to consideration subjected to towers high structures and various equipments at higher elevations.

· Though the directions of winds are always invariable throughout the year still it has to be taken in to consideration for the safety of adjacent residential or commercial areas.

· High elevated structure or towers are mostly considered if the plant is located near the airport.

· Climatic conditions play a vital role in designing a PP for extremely hot deserts wherein the provision of sun shades for the maintenance and operators are mandatory.

· On the other hand the structural shades with a provision of enclosed heating shelters shall be considered at extreme low temperature areas. For example Snow or ice.

How to Build Gymnastic Bars From PVC

How to Build Gymnastic Bars From PVC | eHow.com

Many fitness enthusiasts are increasingly using gymnastic bars for building upper body strength. Purchasing gymnastic bars can be expensive, but you can make them yourself at home with PVC pipes. Parallettes are parallel bars used for a variety of fitness training exercises, including push-ups, presses, L-sits and V-sits. Home-made parallettes are easy to make, economical and functional.

Instructions
1
Prepare the 10-foot PVC pipe for cutting. You will be cutting two 24-inch sections, four 8-inch sections and eight 5-inch sections out of this PVC pipe for the gymnastic bar components. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark off each of the sections, starting with the two 24-inch sections.

2
Wrap electrical tape around the PVC pipe such that the edge of the tape meets with each of the pencil mark measurements you made. Use a handsaw and cut the pipe along the edge of the electric tape. Repeat the process until you have cut all sections as required in Step 1.

3
Lay out the glue, "T" and elbow joints, which wiill be used to attach each section of PVC pipe according to its functionality. The 24-inch sections will form the top parallel bars of your equipment. The four 8-inch sections will serve as legs and the eight 5-inch sections will become the base. The finished product will be a parallette that is 24 inches long and 8 inches high.

4
Apply primer and glue to the "T" and elbow joints. Attach one elbow joint to the top of each 8-inch section (leg). Attach one "T" joint to the bottom of each 8-inch section. Connect the top arms (24-inch sections) to the elbow joints. Apply glue and primer to the end caps and affix them to one end of each of the eight, 5-inch bases. Connect the open end of the base sections to the "T" joints.

5
Rub sandpaper over the arms of the bars as factory-made PVC tends to be slick, which can cause you to lose your grip, especially as your hands become sweaty while practicing. Sanding the PVC material will make it rough and provide you with a good gripping surface when gymnastic's chalk is used.

Cutting PVC Pipe

How to Correctly Cut PVC Pipe

Some see this as a daunting task, but cutting PVC Pipe is actually very simple if you follow a few short steps and have the correct tools.

The correct tool for the job is a PVC Pipe cutter (see image below), but you could also use a wheeled tubing cutter or a saw. When using a saw, you are going to want to use a miter box to make sure that you make a clean straight cut.

The next step is to measure the length of Pipe you need and mark where you need to make the cut around the pipe. Be sure to double check your measurement to prevent any mistakes. Always cut the longest pieces you need first as this will help you save any waste.

After that, go ahead and cut the pipe. Using whatever tool you choose from the above list, make a clean, straight cut through the pipe. The straighter you make this cut, the tighter a seal you will make when you connect to your PVC Pipe Fitting.

After making the cut, sand down any burrs or debris using a fine grit sandpaper. You can also use a rasp or a razor blade to scrape away any loose materials.

PVC Pipes - Types of PVC Pipes and Their Usage

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), is a thermoplastic polymer or a vinyl polymer constructed of repeating vinyl groups. PVC is widely used in construction industry because it is cheap, durable, and easy to assemble. PVC was discovered at least twice in the 19th century, at first by Henri Victor Regnault in the year 1835 and by Eugen Baumann in the year 1872. Later on in the early 20th century, the Russian chemist Ivan Ostromislensky and Fritz Klatte of the German chemical company Griesheim-Elektron both were attempted to use PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in commercial products.

PVC is widely used in many areas and that are:

Clothing: PVC is widely used in clothing and PVC clothing is common in Goth, Punk and alternative fashions. Though it is cheaper than rubber, leather, and latex, PVC is more widely available. As it is waterproof, therefore the PVC is commonly used in coats, skiing equipment, shoes, jackets, aprons, and bags.

Pipes: The PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is used for producing pipes for various municipal and industrial applications. Its light weight, high strength, and low reactivity features make it well-suited to this purpose.

Signs: Polyvinyl chloride or PVC is formed in flat sheets in a variety of thicknesses and colors. PVC is often expanded to create voids in the interior of the material, providing additional thickness and minimal extra cost.

Made from a plastic and vinyl combination material, the PVC Pipes are durable, hard to damage, long lasting and do not rust, rot, or wear over time. For these vibrant features, such pipes are most commonly used in water systems, underground wiring, sewer lines and many more areas. These type of pipes are used for irrigation systems proved to be effective, and that has since been considered an affordable and reliable means for water piping. The smooth surface of the PVC Pipe is also resistant to bacterial contamination and hence, many water companies rely on these pipes for their systems to keep them free of contamination.

A number of PVC Pipes are widely used for a wide variety of applications. These are also a suitable material for greenhouses, small home playgrounds, furniture, pool toy frames, foam weapons, custom truck toppers, or even giant building sets for kids. These pipes are popular material for window and door frames because of their impact modifiers and stabilizers. PVC Pipes are categorized into many types that include:

o PVC Water Pipe- Bigger PVC pipes are used in carrying fresh water from water treatment plants to homes and businesses. Smaller PVC pipes are used in distributing the water to sinks, showers, and other fixtures.

o PVC Plumbing Pipe- These type of pipes are used for a specific purpose in plumbing. It is a type of plastic plumbing pipe primarily used to transport high pressured water.

o PVC Sewer Pipes- Sewer carrier pipes are housed inside containment pipes that do not create leak before the outer containment wall is breached.

How to Fix a Broken Sprinkler Pipe

How to Fix a Broken Sprinkler Pipe

Broken sprinklers can bring with them a whole set of problems like loss of pressure, water logging and unexpected water fountains, leading to water wastage. To troubleshoot the problem you will have to look for a plumber who may charge you a fortune, meanwhile your lawn will start growing brown. To avoid this you will have to take just a few steps. Actually fixing a broken sprinkler is not as difficult as you think, rather it can be fairly easy if you have the right technique and equipment. Let us learn about the method for fixing a broken sprinkler pipe.

Fixing a Broken Sprinkler Pipe

It is always better to list down the requirements beforehand as it becomes very irritating to visit a hardware store in the middle of a task. So, take a look at the requirements given below for fixing the broken sprinkler.

You will Need:
Pipe
Hacksaw or pipe cutter
Shovel
2 straight connectors
Pen or a pencil
Rags
PVC glue
Primer (for PVC) and a threader (for metal)
Steps:

Step # 1
The first thing you need to do is look for the leakage. It will be generally at the point where there is unexpected water sprouting out or a mucky grass area. Once you find the leakage it is easy to treat it, but if you take hours to locate the leakage it will be a tiring as well as frustrating job. So be attentive while you are identifying the leakage.

Step # 2
Once the leakage spot is found turn off the water supply. You can stop the water supply of your house if you have a separate connection, or you can contact the local water department and request them to turn down the supply. If you don't stop the water supply, the task will become extremely difficult.

Step # 3
Dig the ground with the shovel till the broken pipe is visible perhaps you can dig more to create enough room around the pipe to work. Make sure that you clear the area thoroughly by removing the water clogged near the pipe as well the mud and dirt.

Step # 4
Now, it is time to cut the broken pipe. Take a hacksaw or a pipe cutter and cut approximately 2 to 3 inches on both the sides of the pipe. If you are not confident enough about the measurements, take the two connectors, one with the female end and the other with the male end and hold them over the broken pipe. Mark the points on both the sides where you are supposed to cut the pipe.

Step # 5
Slide the male and female connectors into the new pipe and keep it aside. Take a rag and clean the ends of the pipe and remove the dirt properly. Also clean the ends of the connectors and apply primer (in case of PVC pipe) and a threader (in case of metal pipe) to the connectors as well as to the pipe ends. Let the primer dry.

Step # 6
Once the primer dries, apply PVC glue inside the connectors and on the outer surface of the pipe and attach them. Be quick in doing this because the glue might dry in air.

Step # 7
Leave the connection as it is for at least an hour or so. Wait until is dries completely because if you turn on the water supply before drying water pressure might disturb the connection come apart and your efforts will go in vain.

Step # 8
Now, it is the last step to check the success of the task by testing the working of new connection. Turn on the water supply and check for any leakage. If you don't find any, it is clear that you have followed the correct technique.

Fixing a broken pipe is a part of your sprinkler system repair. To avoid frequent pipe leakage and its breaking, keep monitoring your pipeline on a regular basis. If the problem in the system is not because of the broken pipe, you will need a thorough inspection of the system to find the cause of the problem.
